Oxidation Ditch (OD)

OD can remove wastewater that contains high organic and nutrient concentrations.


Overview

Some types of wastewater such as rubber, seafood contaminated high organic matter (COD, BOD and TOC) and nutrients (TN and TP), OD was selected as a simple technology that can treat simultaneously organic matter and nutrients.

OD has often shape and two walls for stream direction. OD has two zones of anoxic and aerobic with long retention time of water and sludge. The air supply to the tank using durface mixers, but in some cases, the installation of submersible mixers or blowers may apply.


Wastewater prior to oxidation ditch is usually removed by garbage and sand but trash and sand sedimentation tanks. After processing in the oxidation ditch, two settling tanks should be used for biological sedimentation and sludge recirculation. In some cases, sand filter can add as the optional if required high SS removal.

Advantages and disadvantages of Oxidation Ditch

+ Advantages:

– Low operating costs by using less power than conventional activated sludge;

– Reliable, high safety, less shock for biological sludge;

– Sludge production less than conventional activated sludge retention time so long;

– Can handle simultaneous organic matter and nutrients.

+ Disadvantages

– Requires large land area, therefore, OD is only suitable for rural areas with low property values.
